1986

I was still a toddler during 1986 so I don't really have any memories from this year, but I do have a lot of nostalgia for the movies and music from this time.

Albums

1986 was a great year for soundtracks with most triumphant music.

Rank Album Artist Title Label Impression
1 Various Artists The Transformers The Movie: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Scotti Bros. Records

This soundtrack has one of my all-time favorite songs The Touch. It's the perfect song to make you feel powerful when you're having a rough day. You've got the touch, you've got the power!

2 Various Artists Top Gun Soundtrack Columbia

Take the highway to the danger zone and give this album a listen!

3 Descendents Enjoy! New Alliance

Descendents were prolific in the mid-80's, not my favorite album, but this one has Cheer on it.

4 Various Artists Rad Soundtrack RCA

Not as well known as the other soundtracks on this list, but Fight to Survive and Thunder in Your Heart stand up to other 80's triumphant greats. I really need to see this movie.

5 Youth of Today Break Down the Walls Revelation Records

I need to shout out this straight edge youth crew classic even though hardcore isn't my favorite genre.

Books

Three great books from 1986.

1 Speaker for the Dead Orson Scott Card

The sequel to Ender's Game that I enjoyed almost as much. The further books in the series, not so much.

2 Replay Ken Grimwood

I'm always a sucker for a good time travel story and this is a really good one.

3 The Light Fantastic Terry Pratchett

The second book in the Discworld series. I love when media breaks the fourth wall and I still remember getting called out at one part in particular in this book. There's a lot of books in this series and I should read more of them.

Movies

The best part of the 80's continues with another packed year of great movies. The year is so packed Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Top Gun don't even make my top five.

Rank Movie Title Impression
1 Stand by Me

The 80's were great for movies that captured childhood adventure so well. This movie maybe does it better than any other.

2 Aliens

James Cameron came in and took the Alien series in a more action-oriented direction. Things went downhill afterwards, but this one is still great.

3 Blue Velvet

It's a David Lynch film, so they're not for everyone, but I do like this one a lot.

4 Castle in the Sky

There won't be a whole lot of anime on this list, but this is a great Studio Ghibli film.

5 Labyrinth

I dressed up as the Goblin King himself for Halloween back in 2003. Dance, magic dance, David Bowie RIP.
